Technology

Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs)

Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) are personal technologies that can help you communicate in one-to-one conversations, personal listeners and caption capable telephones, examples of Assistive Listening Devices

Assistive Listening Systems (ALSs)

Assistive Listening Systems (ALSs) are technologies that can help an individual or a group of people hear, usually in larger settings. Hearing Loop technology, FM systems and IR (infrared) systems are examples of Assistive Listening Systems

The technologies involved for Assistive Listening Devices and Assistive Listening Systems work together to help in difficult hearing situations.

Alerting Devices

Alerting Devices inform people with hearing loss to important sounds normally heard in the environment. Strobe or blinking lights and "Shake Awake" alarm clocks are examples of alerting devices.

Learn more about Assistive Listening/Alerting Devices from the Rochester Chapter Demonstration Centers.

Unfortunately, most Assistive Listening Devices and Systems are not available locally, but are readily available online. Check our Resource Page to see some of the places to obtain these devices.

Note: be sure to check the return policy since some vendors charge a restocking fee, and a device that looks good on paper may not be suitable.

A word about telecoils

When selecting a hearing aid or discussing your cochlear implant, remember to ask your provider about a telecoil (T-coil) . A telecoil is a small coil of copper wire wrapped around a rod in your aid or implant that acts like as a receiver from an assistive listening sound source, such as a hearing loop or telephone.Telecoils are essential if you want to conveniently access an assistive listening system. If your hearing aid/cochlear implant has a telecoil be sure it's been activated by your provider. If you have questions about how we use our telecoils, Contact Us.
