To join. Contact us : (info@hearinglossrochester.org) and someone will respond with the title and date of the upcoming discussion. A zoom invitation is sent out a few days before the discussion. Most titles are available through the Monroe County and OWWL (Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming, Livingston counties) Library Systems, as a print book, an e-book and/or audiobook on Overdrive/Libby and for purchase on Amazon.

Tuesday February 3: Chapter Program: 12:00-1:00 “Cybersecurity Safety in the age of AI: What it Means for People with Hearing Loss”

It’s no secret we are ALL at risk for cyber fraud. It comes in many forms: online, email, text and

phone calls. But there’s another danger too, especially for older adult and people with hearing loss: loneliness.

Andy Chandler is a retired cybersecurity professional. And while he wishes we didn’t have to be so cautious online, being “cyber aware” is now a basic life skill because of the way the internet was built. Chandler has shared this info with HLAA audiences before, as a presenter on cyber scams at the last three HLAA conventions, (A fair warning to new attendees: he is widely known for his terrible jokes!)

Chandler takes this topic very seriously because he has a lifelong hearing loss. He’s worn hearing aids since age five, and 13 years ago he received his cochlear implant. He has always been fascinated by technology that helps him “hear” better. With the advent of computers and the internet, with texting, email, and caption apps, he was enthralled.

His two favorite hearing-related devices of all time actually predate the smartphone: the Sears Tele-caption Decoder II and the BlackBerry with that glorious physical keyboard. Don’t miss Chandler’s wise advice to prevent being scammed online by learning how to recognize the signs of fraud, why we don’t need to fear AI, and most importantly, why we need to be cautious in seeking companionship online – or with an AI Bot.
